SLEEPY HOLLOW COUNTRY CLUB, Post Road, Scarborough-on-Hudson, NY 10510, 914-941-3062, www.sleepyhollowcc.org:
This Charles Blair Macdonald design has been brought back to his original vision in one of the great transformations in the history of course architecture. Go to www.golfclubatlas.com for an in depth review of the course and many great photos as well. The work has been completed with the addition of Scottish links bunkering and the removal of hundreds of trees to open the stunning vistas. The club is a visual treat with many of the fairways overlooking the Hudson River and the Stanford White designed clubhouse recalls the elegance of the turn of the century. The course has a rating of 71.5; a slope of 137 and measures 6,400 yards from the mid tees.

Wykagyl Country Club, 1195 North Avenue, New Rochelle, NY 10804-0040, (914) 632 2359, www.wykagylcc.org
Wykagyl Country Club opened in 1905 and was then re-designed over time by Don Ross and A.W. Tillinghast. The Club was made over, in 1994, by Arthur Hill and finally, in 2006, Coore-Crenshaw improved the course further and today it has great vistas and well designed holes. The clubhouse was expanded a few years ago and now the Grill Room overlooks the 18th green and a covered terrace overlooks the 9th green; the result is a great blend of a traditional clubhouse and modern amenities. Over the years, Wykagyl has hosted many charitable tournaments, notably the JAL Big Apple Classic. The rating is 71.7, slope of 139 and 6,460 yards.

PLAINFIELD COUNTRY CLUB, Post Road, 1591Woodland Avenue, Edison, NJ, (908)769-3672,www.plainfiledcc.com:
In 2011, Plainfield will host the Barclays, the first leg of the FedEx Cup Championship. The Plainfield Country Club was founded in 1890. The present course was designed by Don Ross in 1921 and is considered to be a Ross masterpiece. The rolling terrain seldom gives the player a level stance. Six water hazards and nine cross-bunkers complicate the straight and narrow path from tee to green. In true Ross fashion, the greens are king. The middle tees are 72.0, slope of 132 and 6,435 yards.

SUNNINGDALE COUNTRY CLUB, Underhill Road, Scarsdale, NY,
914-472 6972, www.sunningdale.org :
W terrain typical of Westchester, Sunningdale has rolling, tree-lined fairways requiring accuracy off the tee. There are seven doglegs and six severely tilting fairways of the sort for which Tillinghast was famous. Dinner on the terrace overlooking the first fairway is a special feature of any outing here. The course rating is 70.4; slope is 129 and 6,269 yards.

ROCKRIMMON COUNTRY CLUB, 2949 Long Ridge Road, Stamford, CT,
203-322-3408, www.rockrimmoncc.org :
This Robert Trent Jones designed course is beautifully conditioned and surprisingly difficult. The bluegrass fairways are tree-lined avenues that offer glorious vistas. Much of Rockrimmon’s appeal is in the variety of its par 4s, including a number of holes that require irons or fairway woods off the tees. Also unique to this Country Club is the fact that the clubhouse is situated in Stamford, Connecticut, while most of the golf course lies in Pound Ridge, NY. The course rating is 73.5; slope 128 and 6,590 yards.

KNICKERBOCKER COUNTRY CLUB, 188 Knickerbocker Road, Tenafly, NJ,
201-568-4034, www.knickerbocker.cc :
This course is a Donald Ross design with some later remodeling by Geoffrey Cornish done on six of the greens. The course is deceptively difficult because of its narrow fairways, sharp angles and small greens. Dinner here traditionally begins with an unbelievable raw bar served on the terrace overlooking the putting green. The course rating is 71.1; slope is 130 and 6,410 yards.

THE WHIPPOORWILL CLUB, 150 Whippoorwill Road, Armonk, NY,
914-273-3059, www.whippoorwillclub.org :
Don Ross designed this course at the height of his career, but, in 1928, Charles Banks redesigned the entire course and it is thought to be his masterpiece. In 2002 the clubhouse was replaced to imitate the surrounding mansions. The course rating is 71.9; slope is 139 and 6,372 yards.

GLENARBOR GOLF CLUB, 234 Bedford Center Road, Bedford Hills, NY, (914) 241-0700
(845) 351 4543, www.glenarborclub.com:
GlenArbor is a Gary Player signature golf course and one that Player refers to as his masterpiece. The course is blessed with terrain of unspoiled wetlands, natural grades and abundant wildlife; all three are interwoven into this majestic course. The caddies are professionals who spend their six months off at Casa de Campo. Visit the website for a tour of the course and Greek Revival clubhouse. The rating is 71.9, slope of 138 and 6,510 yards.

FAIRVIEW COUNTRY CLUB, 1241 King Street, Greenwich, CT,
203-531-4283, www.fairviewcountryclub.org :
This course, designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1968, encompasses 200 acres of the most beautiful, wooded backcountry in Greenwich. The short front nine has water in play on five of the first seven holes; length and accuracy are necessary on the back nine. The “IKE” is hosted here, so you know it’s a challenge. The clubhouse is beautiful and the service is superb, making it a great place to treat a special guest. The course rating is 70.6; slope is 132 and 6,250 yards.

METROPOLIS COUNTRY CLUB, 289 Dobbs Ferry Road (Route 100B), White Plains, NY, 914-040-4840, www.metropoliscc.org :
In 1922, Metropolis purchased the former site of the Century Country Club, designed by Herbert Strong, and engaged A.W. Tillinghast to revise the course. Metropolis features rolling, tree-lined fairways and greens with tricky contours and multiple tiers. The 6th Hole is one of the great holes in the Metropolitan Area. The Club has hosted four Met Opens and three Met. Amateurs. The amenities and food service are also of top quality and the facilities were completely remodeled for the 2004 season. The course rating is 71.9; slope is 135 and 6,387 yards.

QUAKER RIDGE GOLF CLUB, 40 Griffen Avenue, Scarsdale, NY, 914-723-3701,
www.quakerridgegc.org:
The Met Golfer Magazine has ranked Quaker Ridge Golf Club as number one in the Metropolitan Area. At least seven holes have appeared on national and regional “best holes” lists over the years; with nearly every hole line by trees and the greens lightening fast and cleverly bunkered. Designed by A. W. Tillinghast, in 1916, Quaker Ridge is a course that places extreme demands on the positioning of every shot. The middle tees are 72.6, the slope is 143 and 6,400 yards.
